New Jobs…and Tips for Applying
September 12, 2011
New jobs are posted on the Workforce1 website every Monday and a sample of jobs are highlighted on the Workforce1 Career Blog every Thursday. Search the listings for your next job – and then follow the tips below to increase your chances of getting an interview.
Online Application Tips:
- Read the qualifications and assess your fit. There are ways to apply for a “stretch” job. (A stretch job is a job that you KNOW you could do if given the chance, but you lack the required credentials and/or experience.) An online application – with competition from hundreds of other applicants and limited space to explain yourself – is not likely to land you that stretch job. So, carefully read the required qualifications. If you don’t have the right experience, education, or license, save your time and emotional energy for another job application. (If you want advice on applying for a stretch job, Ask a Recruiter or attend a Workforce1 workshop.)
- Don’t make us guess if you are qualified or not. Once you’ve decided that you are a fit for the job, tell us. Tell us exactly – and tell us in as much detail as you can – why you are qualified. Use your most RELEVANT job experience to answer the application questions on the Workforce1 website, even if it isn’t your most recent job. Just like you would tailor your resume (see related posts) for a job, you should tailor your responses to an online application based on the specific job description.
- Present a professional image. Review your application for correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Use an email address that is work-appropriate. (For more on what we mean about a work-appropriate email address, read this blog.) You are communicating your attention to detail, your professionalism, and your interest in the job.
For more advice, read more of our blog entries, ask us a question over the blog, or come in to a Workforce1 workshop.

I am trying to apply for the Team Assistant
Must have strong administration and customer support skills.
Location: Manhattan. Every time it tells me to log in I do but can’t get to apply.
Hi AJM, There could be a few reasons you can’t apply including: the position may have been filled and/or the information you provided to Workforce1 indicates that you are not a match. (In other words, if ajob requires 3 years of experience and a candidate said they only had 2 years of experience, the website will not allow the candidate to see the job.) However, there are lots more jobs and recruitment events on the webpage: nyc.gov/workforce1. You can also visit a Workforce1 Career Center for even more jobs.
